At Homestead's Hatchery, I am proud to have 4 dusky pionus, all from different bloodlines. Ruby, the hen pictured to the left, is a stunning beauty that was hatched in Newmarket, Ontario. Her mate, Rio (who adores her), is an enormous male dusky from Pearson's Perch, formerly in Virginia. These two are real lovey dovies and spend a lot of time schmoozing, preening and playing together. They have had a couple of infertile nests.

My younger male, Salsa, is a cutie from High Spirits Aviary and a real piglet when it comes to food! He resides with Chablis, a sweet, petite dusky hen from Texas. They are still young and have some time yet to get to know each other and mature before contemplating a family. I have already spotted Salsa feeding Chablis, so love is definitely in the air! News! Salsa and Chablis are parents! see below!

Directly below are 4 pictures of Salsa. The 2 on the left are when he was quite young. Compare how he's matured with the 2 photos of him on the right. Salsa's holding a much coveted nutriberry in pic. 4...a treat that ties with almonds as his favourites! Come to think of it, all foods are his favourites!!
This is my beautiful dusky hen, Ruby. She is one of the most stunning duskies I have ever seen. Her colouring is breathtaking! Ruby's father threw her and her 4 brothers out of the nest when they were only a few days old. They fell through the wire, naked and blind onto a cement floor where they were later found by the breeder and rushed to a wonderful, knowledgeable and caring handfeeder. Luckily, all five babies survived the ordeal and I was blessed with Ruby!
Hey Rio...  when mom's not looking, I'm gonna poop down her computer screen!
Holy cow Ruby! You really did it! Oh man, mom's not gonna like this!
Maybe if I hide you, she won't know you did it!
My sweet Texas Belle...Chablis!
<---This is my younger pair of duskies... Chablis on the left and Salsa on the right. They cohabitate now after 4 months, side by side, in separate cages.
This shadow box was made with the molted feathers underneath my duskies'  tails. Now you can see why the pionus parrots are also called "red vented "parrots.
                           Wonderful News !

Homestead's Hatchery is very proud to announce the arrival of the first clutch of 4 gorgeous dusky pionus chicks out of Salsa and Chablis! The babies were pulled for handfeeding (when the oldest chick was 3 weeks old) on May 23rd, 2002 and are all doing well. I'm so proud of both parents who were very attentive and kept their babies safe, warm and well fed. Salsa's VERY protective of his famly! Chablis' such a gentle mom who cared for her babies with amazing tenderness. I congratulate them both for doing such a great job with their very first clutch. The chicks will be available for adoption when fully weaned.
OK, so we're not gonna win any beauty contests...YET!
